The Cat
People carry out a number of programs that benefit homeless and needy cats. Here
are the highlights of these much-needed programs:
The Feral Cat Care and Feeding
Program. Volunteers working with this program provide two square meals a day for several
colonies of ferals living in a huge county park outside town, and twice-daily visits to
assess the cats' condition, remove new arrivals for fostering/adoption, and otherwise keep
tabs on the cats' health. If you should want to volunteer to become one of our Feral
Feeders (training will be provided), you will have to make a comitment to one night or
morning a week and promise to be regular! We often have cat food we can provide you with,
but when we don't, we ask that you contribute a bag of kibble or some cans of food. This
is a high-involvement, hands-on volunteer program, and the cats come to depend on you: if
you're not there, they go hungry. If you think that helping with this program is for you,
we would love to have you help us. Please give Barb Hays a call at 327-4706.
The Colonies Assistance Program. This program, begun in 1996, provides assistance to people
who are trying to manage feral colonies -- whether it is a colony of strays in a downtown
alley or a bunch beside a canal, or a couple of strays who wandered up to their back door.
We provide guidance, traps, food (sometimes), and most importantly --
funds for fixing those ferals! Call our office and leave a message. we'll get back to you as soon as we
can.
SPAY TODAY! This is The Cat People's voucher program,
designed to help low income families spay or neuter their companion
cats. Most local veterinarians accept the vouchers, which are
good for $25.00 towards an alteration surgery. Call our office
at 327-4706, and ask for a SPAY TODAY application. Be sure to
clearly leave your address..
- Emergency Assistance.
This program lets us help when and as we can, and according to the funds we have
available. If you have a cat emergency, call us at Pawsitively Cats 327-PAWS for quick
action.
- Senior Citizens'
Veterinary Assistance Fund. We set up this fund with contributions made in
the memory of Patty Harrell, our first Pawsitively Cats manager, and our Treasurer for
many years. Patty died of cancer in 1999. We donate cat food, kibble and litter to
many seniors around town, and help out with shots and spaying/neutering. Call our office
to get on the list.
